Field Trip to San Francisco

My quilting buddy Jeanne and I went on a field trip today. We live across the Bay from the city of San Francisco. My DIL gave me a gift certificate to Britex Fabrics at Christmas so Jeanne and I scheduled a trip into the city to check it out. It was so much fun! It's not geared so much toward quilters and the fabrics there are pretty overpriced, but this piece of 100% silk had my name on it! It is stunningly gorgeous!!!

I found it on the fourth floor where they have the remnants. The ladies on the fourth floor are very nice. The other floors' employees were a bit snobbish for my taste. We started on the fourth floor and worked our way down. After we visited all the floors we went back up to the fourth floor and this is when I found this beauty.

I think I'll either make a blouse or a jacket out of it. Now I'm in search of the perfect pattern. There's only about 1 1/2 yards of it so it'll probably have to be a short sleeved blouse.

After shopping at Britex we went to the Cheesecake Factory for lunch. Another first for me and it didn't dissapoint either! I had fish tacos. Yummy!!! Even though our lunch was more than filling we had to have cheesecake. It isn't called Cheesecake Factory for nothing! Jeanne and I shared a slice. There are so many kinds of cheesecake to choose from it made it difficult to pick one. We chose something with lemon and raspberry sauce. It was delicious!

On the way back to BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) we stopped in at the Ghirardelli shop. Such a fun day and perfect weather to boot. We'll have to schedule more field trips in the future!!!

That is the most drop dead gorgeous piece of silk I have ever seen.
PLEASE don't cut it up.
Just hang it on the wall.
You will loose the design as soon as you cut it up.
The size is perfect to hang.
When I saw it I thought it was a very complex quilt.
If you don't want to hang it on your wall send it to me and I'll hang it on my wall in a place of honor!

Wow, that sounds like a fun trip! What a great day you had.

That piece of silk is awesome! I thought it was a complex-patterned quilt too. How could you ever bear to cut it up?

Ooohhh! Beautiful silk, yummy cheesecake, and Ghirardelli to boot! What a fantastic day!

Do you know there is a Cheesecake Factory at Stoneridge across from P.F. Changs? Yummy cheesecake; terrible wait for seating. Get there early.

Roberta... what a gorgeous piece of silk! I must say I went to Britek on my last trip to SF and I couldn't agree with you more. But it sounds like you had a wonderful day... I am jealous!

Hey, back in October you posted a great picture of a string quilt--it looks like something i'd like to do. To me it looked like it was made of 1" (finished) strips, with 2" dark sashing or interrupters along the way. Was the initial strip about 12"? BTW, i agree with all these people about that piece of silk you got in San Francisco! Does that shop have a web site? I'd love to be able to get some of their stuff. Mary in Chicago.

Mary - Thanks for your inquiry. I believe the quilt you're referring to can be found here http://colorfulquiltingworld.blogspot.com/2008/10/quilt-retreat-projects.html
I made this quilt with 2" strips that ranged from 3" to 7" in length. They were sewn end to end to make one long strip. The center panel consists of 8 of these strips that were approximately 27" long. The idea is to stagger the seams. This center panel was then "bordered" by dark green 4" (unfinished) strips. You continue adding strips and borders to make the quilt as big as you like.
This quilt is king size.

Mary - Britex does have a website however it's just informational. I believe there is a link to it in the original posting. They don't have an online store. If you ever get to San Francisco you should check it out! I definitely prefer quilt shops but it was fun to do once.
